Veniero’s Pastry, East Village

Veniero's Pastry, East Village

Everyone knows that a birthday celebration would not be complete without dessert! We made sure not to fill up too much at dinner, so we could load up on sweets afterwards. After learning that Spot Dessert Bar had a 40 minute wait, we wandered over to Veniero’s, a snazzy, old school Italian pastry shop that has been in business for over 120 years. The smell of sweet baked goods hits you as soon as you step inside, and the pastry displays draw you in further.

The dessert menu is huge, overwhelming even, but after seeing the tartufo in the in the displays upfront, I had my heart set on it. A chocolate ball filled with vanilla ice cream with a maraschino cherry center seems like a good choice. It doesn’t look that big, but I would recommend sharing it. John had to help me after he finished his slice of apple pie. I wasn’t a fan of the chocolate shell (to be honest, it made me feel kind of sick), but the rest of it was quite enjoyable.

Our table of six had quite the assortment of cakes, ice cream, and pies. There’s also coffee and reasonably priced cordials to pair with your dessert if that’s your thing. Overall, Veniero’s seems like a good dessert place to come with friends, especially as there’s something for even the pickiest eaters, but I’ll admit that I wasn’t wowed by this visit.

I’m a big fan of the chocolate ball/chocolate sphere concept, but more often than not, I find that the chocolate taste like rubber or old fridge. I’m not sure whether it’s because they have to use a special chocolate for covering (which doesn’t taste as good as chocolate is supposed to)? The inside of the chocolate ball looks really nice though.

I love the chocolate ball concept, but I’ve never had a chocolate shell that tastes good. Maybe it’s exposed to air or maybe they use cheap chocolate? I dunno. The shell is never any good.

Sorry to hear you weren’t amazed by the visit and that the chocolate made you sick. But, when I look at that photo, I fantasize a size of yummy basketball-sized dessert! :)

That dessert was quite pretty to photograph. It’s actually only slightly bigger than a baseball… sorry to disappoint, haha! :P
