For Ken’s birthday, we planned a surprise dinner at Congee Village in the Lower East Side. Even with a reservation, we had to wait quite a while for a table on a Friday evening. Popular spot. and there were several other groups there for birthday dinners too.
It goes without saying that you have to try the congee here. There was every possible type of congee you could imagine, including a snail and frog congee that disturbed John. We shared the Healthy Vegetarian Congee ($3.95), but I easily could have finished it all by myself. Growing up, I ate a lot of congee, and man, I’ve really missed this stuff! The congee was good on its own, but even better with tofu topped with scallions. Now that fall has arrived, I’m planning on making veggie congee at home. Mmm, shiitake mushrooms and ginger would be real tasty.

atI passed that place so many times. It’s on that big street on the border to Chinatown, isn’t it? Though it was closed every time I walked by, so I never made it in there, even though I’m a huge congee fan. Looks so delicious:)
