Another chapter of the soba adventures… Friday dinner at Soba Totto with Angela.
The entrance is easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. I’m so glad we made reservations. It was very crowded, and it seemed like they might have been understaffed. That, or their waiters just aren’t very attentive. The tables are packed very tightly together, so you end up hearing every little bit of your neighbors’ conversations, whether you want it or not. We were seated next to a couple who were on a *very* awkward first date. Heheheh.
Appetizer #1: Nasu Agedashi ($6), lightly deep fried Japanese eggplant in warm tensuyu broth. (I rarely eat eggplant because John absolutely hates it. Perhaps even more than he hates mushrooms.) Tasty, but very greasy. It was fun to watch the bonito flakes were gently swaying in the bowl.Appetizer #2: Vegetable tempura ($10). Lovely light batter on these veggies. Never had lotus root tempura before.
Hot Tanuki Soba ($12) with fried tempura flakes and fishcake.
Hot Sansai Soba ($13) with mountain vegetables and mushrooms. I’ve had the sansai at Soba-ya and Cocoron. Might as well try it here too! Topped my soba with shichimi (Japanese chili pepper) for a little kick.
A solid bowl of soba. It didn’t offer as much vegetables as the other soba places I’ve visited so far, but the ingredients were of a higher quality. Pricing is very similar, and Soba Totto’s appetizers were much larger than I was expecting. Overall, Soba Totto feels a little more upscale than the others. Good for date night!
