Oh hey, it’s Portland Pizza Week! You know the drill: $2 slices at over 30 pizzerias across town. This is Portland, so there are plenty of vegan options too. This post is not any kind of collaboration/sponsorship; I just wanted to indulge in a crazy food project for the week.
I can’t decide if I should be proud or ashamed that I hit up every Eastside spot featuring a vegan slice (there was only one Westside slice), but here’s my vegan Pizza Week tour in chronological order. My top picks are Virtuous Pie, Back to Eden, and Atlas Pizza. My list below also includes the bonus slice at East Glisan that was not advertised on the Pizza Week website. Good thing I planned long walks throughout the week to walk off all the ‘zza. Next week is Portland Salad Week, right?
Blackbird Pizza: Stadium Special
Black bean tomato base, queso, soyrizo, black olives, tomatoes, jalapenos, green onions, and tortilla chips. This is basically vegan nachos on a pizza (yum!), and one of the best looking slices of the week. A strong way to start Pizza Week!
Virtuous Pie: Jalapeno Popper
House made cream cheese, jalapenos, bacon, cheddar sauce. It’s no secret that I love Virtuous Pie, so naturally I opted for the $8 pie instead of the $2 slice. As always, VP is so good. Not pictured: a glass of Happy Mountain Kombucha ’cause this pie is spicy!
Sizzle Pie: Snake River Party Boi
Chipotle red sauce, red onion pico, pastor, aji amarillo sauce, and cilantro. Thumbs up for making this slice thinner than the usual Sizzle Pie slice. Even though there’s no vegan cheese, there’s plenty of sauce and flavor. Paired it with an IPA.
East Glisan: Bonus Vegan Slice
Leeks, grilled zucchini, mushrooms, chopped garlic, arugula pesto, and lemon. This was not advertised on the Pizza Week website, but was worth the visit. Heavy on ‘shrooms and garlic (do you like my sexy breath?), and it’s even tastier when you add a little bit of chili oil.
Fillmore: The Naanfather
Tandoori spiced cauliflower, secret sauce, herbs, roasted peanuts. They went all in with an Indian inspired flavor profile. That green sauce is delicious, and I let the chef know they could go heavier on the sauce. Unfortunately, the slice in the photo below is a bit naked on the top…
Straight From New York Pizza: The Big Apple
Apple sauce base, Granny Smith apples, Honeycrisp apples, brown sugar and cinnamon granola crumble, and streusel icing drizzle. I appreciate the attempt at a dessert pizza, but this was, unfortunately, my least favorite of the week. Needs more sauce, more flavor for all that dough. (SFNY’s downtown location is serving up the Straight From New Delhi vegan slice, but I didn’t trek out there as it’s the only vegan slice on the Westside.)
Atlas Pizza: Rocket Man
Kim Jong Grillin’ soycurl bulgogi, Follow Your Heart, sesame braised kale, gochujang sauce drizzle, sesame seeds, and pickles. Lots of great flavors I love that normally wouldn’t be on a pizza. Wish they would offer this pie every day!
Mississippi Pizza Pub: aMAIZEing
Zesty caramelized onion sauce, nutritional yeast, zucchini, corn, red onion, basil, and sea salt. I would normally say “meh” to a pie that uses nooch as the cheese and features corn as the star ingredient, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one.
Back to Eden: Chili Rubbed Cauliflower Pizza
BBQ sauce, house made mozzarella, chili rubbed cauliflower, caramelized shallots, and scallions. Saved one of the best slices for last! This is the only gluten free slice on my tour, and they loaded that sourdough crust with so many goodies. Now please excuse me, I’m off to enjoy the extra slice that’s sitting in my fridge.
