Fire & Oak, Jersey City

Fire & Oak, Jersey City

Fire & Oak has become our go to weekend brunch spot. That’s unlikely to change anytime soon since Michael Anthony’s renovated and turned into Battello, and it’s unclear if they still offer the brunch special. (If they were smart, they would!)

For $10, you get unlimited beverages while you dine. When we placed our order, the waiter goes, “Our policy has changed. The unlimited drinks is only for an hour and a half. There was uhh… an incident last weekend.” Still sounds like plenty of drinks to me, and I immediately pictured someone so drunk that were dancing on the tables. Unfortunately, we learned it the incident was far more serious and involved an ambulance. Oh dear.

John ordered the Bananas Foster French Toast ($11.95), which obviously included French toast, along with caramelized bananas, sweet brown sugar rum sauce, toasted walnuts, and an obscene amount of whipped cream. What a beauty! So. Much. Food. Bananas Foster French Toast - Fire & OakI ordered the Mushroom Florentine Omelet ($12.95). The omelet was filled with wild mushrooms, fresh herbs, and Monterey Jack cheese. It was topped with a creamy spinach with a hint of garlic. Home fries on the side, which are by the way, perfectly prepared. As if all that isn’t enough, there’s toast with gigantic slabs of butter. Mushroom Florentine Omelet - Fire & OakThe portions are huge and the food is along the lines of upscale diner food. The quality seems to have stepped up since our last visit. Service is great, and they do a good job at refilling your glass with Freixenet cava. (I recognized the label, and it was the Freixenet Blanc de Blancs.) Brunch + unlimited bubbly = the ultimate weekend indulgence!
