TASTE For Equity 2021, Portland

Taste for Equity, The Redd on Salmon, PortlandTASTE for Equity is a premier food, wine, and cultural event celebrating local community leaders and organizations committed to advancing equity and inclusion in Portland. Hosted at The Redd on Salmon, the 2021 event showcased a diverse group of local chefs, winemakers, artists, speakers, and musicians.

Taste For Equity, The Redd on Salmon

Last September’s TASTE for Equity event was hands down my favorite event of 2021. It was not only beautifully produced — The Redd on Salmon is one of Portland’s finest venues — and featured a stellar lineup of chefs and wineries, but the messaging behind the event is an important one: “TASTE was built off of the idea that community and equity are pivotal to the evolution of our society and region. That connection and relationship matter. Our equity values are foundational to our collective success.”

Throughout the evening, we heard from TASTE for Equity founders Kali Thorne Ladd and Joth Ricci, Poet Laureate of Oregon Anis Mojgani, soul singer and songwriter Tahirah Memory, and DJ Skinny Miracles. TASTE also highlighted local community leaders who are leading the advancement of equity work in Portland, Oregon. Proceeds from the event benefited equity and justice non-profits, including KairosPDX, Latino Network, Native American Youth and Family Center, and Seeding Justice.

There were six chefs participating in the event: Luna Contreras of Chelo and For Esme, Thuy Pham of Mama Dut Foods, Alexandria Guevarra of Allie G Pastries, Nikeisah Newton of Meals 4 Heels, Jaime Soltero of Tamale Boy, and Chris Cha of Smoking Fire Fish. Kiran Cheema of Kulfi was also there with her popsicle cart and rainbow umbrella. My favorite vegan bites were Mama Dut’s fried wontons, Chelo and For Esme’s tostaditas and gorditas, and Meals 4 Heels’ roasted tom kha cauliflower.

I expected to enjoy the wine pairings at this event, but I was blown away by the lineup of Oregon wineries that were organized alphabetically. Some of my favorite sips came from Abbey Creek Winery, Cramoisi Vineyard, Remy Wines, and Shiba Wichern.
