We enjoyed a very low key New Year’s Eve at home (in pajamas!) since John might be coming down with the sniffles, but he was feeling well enough to meet up with Adrienne and Mark for the next day. Can’t believe it’s been over 3 years since we last saw them, and it was well worth the trip to the Upper West Side.

Communal, described as health-conscious community eatery, offers a comfy, laid back space with wooden tables and large windows. It’s not 100% vegetarian, but it’s extremely veggie focused. For example, only one of the four weekday lunch specials contains meat. The rest include tofu, tempeh, or seitan as the protein. I’d love to try the soba spaghetti and tofu balls sometime! Sounds really tasty.

There was nice symmetry to our table: John and Mark both ordered the French toast, Adrienne and I both ordered one of the morning flatbreads. Communal’s French toast ($8) is made with their house-baked challah and comes with fresh fruit on the side.

I like flat breads, and we all know how much I love poached eggs… combine those two things together, and it’s the ultimate brunch dish! The Capri morning flat bread ($12) is topped with oven-roasted portobello mushrooms, garlic kale, pesto, shaved parmesan, and two poached eggs. The eggs were nicely done, and the yolk flowed out beautifully. Thin, crispy flat bread with flavorful toppings. I especially enjoyed the portobellos.

A wonderful first meal of 2015, and of course, our first meal out had to be brunch.
