celebrate phipps! join in the magic! 16" x 42" banners, 4" x 6" postcard, stationary set
The Join in the Magic project was a team effort to create an event that would draw visitors to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. We chose to portray Phipps as a magical fairytale world to express the sense of beauty and wonder one experiences when visiting the gardens. Staff and visitors alike would be encouraged to come dressed in magical costumes for the event. Using the flora and mood of four rooms in the gardens as inspiration, we designed a series of banners, postcards, and stationary sets.
Colors used on all the materials for the project.
I developed a color palette containing four sets of four colors based on the four rooms. All palettes contain a green and two colors specific to the room. A neutral, off-white color is present is all four sets to unify the palettes. Additionally I illustrated a series of fairy silhouettes for the project. The poses of the fairies reflect the mood and feel of each room. The fairies and color palettes are used consistently across all our materials to represent all four rooms.
As part of the design process, we experimented with placing the fairies into both photography and colored environments. We used the silhouettes as a means to reveal glimpses and details of the rooms without giving away the full experience. These early studies informed the designs of all our printed materials.

Treat yourself and your family to a fantastical experience, walking through four wonderfully whimsical rooms at Phipps Conservatory: the Serpentine Room, the South Conservatory, the Victoria Room and the Broderie Room. Come dressed in your own magical costume and meet the fairies of Phipps Conservatory. Each room will infuse your senses with a variety of colors, smells and feels that will take you to distant fairytale lands. The children will love receiving a token of magic in each room, and the adults can remember their journey with a special gift for themselves that they can share with others.

entice, experience, share.
The printed materials each serve a different purpose as part of the event at Phipps. The banners are placed around Phipps Conservatory and the city of Pittsburgh to entice visitors to the event. As part of the magical experience, postcards with fairytale haikus are given to children they visit the rooms. Stationary sets are given to the adult visitors so they can share their experience with others.
